She held the sparkler towards him, encouraging him to take it from her. He shrank away. What was she thinking? She knew how he felt about them. The burns he’d suffered as a child had scarred him in more ways than one but he’d believed he could trust her. He’d told her the truth about that awful day, hoping she would understand. She’d seemed to. Yet here she was, thrusting the sparkler into his face. He tried to recoil, but there was no room to move in the crowd. He looked at her, eyes wide in fear. She was smiling.
